"So wrong the way I was treated"

About: Esperance Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Went to Esperance Hospital because of pain in my shoulder.

The doctor said that I have a leaking implant in my chest but it is only a small leak and you don’t need to worry about that. The doctor literally told me they were putting me on a ward so see your GP in the morning and see if they wanted to do tests because they thought it was a frozen shoulder and I know for a fact that it could of be one of two things.

I’m also a diabetic. They did not make sure I had anything to eat and didn’t worry about my diabetic levels. You don’t give a diabetic a meal at midnight so I had a terrible night. I wasn’t looked after at all.

They know I am a diabetic but the doctor didn’t even look. I said it could be the implant or could be something else. The doctor didn’t take what I was saying seriously. I still don’t really know what it is.

The treatment I got recently was very bad and I felt I was forgotten about.

I said to one of the nurses that my left foot was in pain but they didn’t want to know why as they didn’t look into it. When I got home I found my foot had swollen a lot.

I feel it was so wrong the way I was treated.

If you are going to leave me in Emergency just send me home. Don’t tell me one thing and then do another.

They didn’t even ask me what I could eat and gave me brown bread which I can't eat being diabetic. They kept saying I have to have breakfast. I said I haven’t even had my diabetic medication and am not allowed to eat until I’ve had diabetic medication.

Unless I’m on my death bed, I’m not going back to that hospital. I believe the hospital has cut down on beds.

What got me the most was the doctor said not to worry about it – you have an implant leaking in the body. Don’t know how long it has been leaking for because it is sitting behind a muscle. I feel that this is so wrong.

Even my GP was surprised. I was only sent for an X-ray at the hospital and then got told to go home. Later in the day when I saw my own doctor, they said the X-ray didn’t show anything. So what is the pain through? So why didn’t the Emergency doctor follow through to find out what has caused the pain in my shoulder? They just left me high and dry. I don’t know what caused the pain or what is wrong with my shoulder.

My disabled adult child is an asthmatic. They keep asking me to take them to the hospital but I keep telling them I’ll deal with this at home because I’m not taking you to the hospital. I don’t want them to be treated the same way I was.

It’s having a huge impact on my disabled child’s life because their health givers don’t know what’s wrong with my shoulder. I can’t tell them because the doctor hasn’t told me what has caused the pain in my shoulder.

Dear Iceberg2

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us on Patient Opinion.

I am very sorry to hear about what happened to you while you were in Esperance Hospital. We pride ourselves on the care that we provide to our patients and their families and I sincerely apologise that we have let you down on this occasion. It is imperative that our staff listen to patients and their families and clearly explain what is happening when people are in our care.

I would like to encourage you come back into the hospital or seek medical advice from your GP when you need to and would really appreciate it if you could contact us to talk about your experience.

If you are happy to do this, please feel free to contact Carla Jones, who is the Director of Nursing. Carla can be contacted on 9079 8161 and would really like to talk to you about your concerns so that we can make sure that this does not happen again.

Thank you again for sharing your story with us. We really do appreciate receiving feedback so that we can improve the care that we provide to patients and their families.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
