My elderly parent was brought into Sutherland Hospital in the early hours of the morning recently. My parent was acutely unwell and needed to stay in hospital for 3 weeks, one at Sutherland Hospital, two at another hospital. The medical team who were looking after my parent at Sutherland Hospital were asked multiple times about my parent’s swollen, puffy, red, and painful oozing leg (on the same side as the hip replacement they had previously). At no point in time did any doctor even bother to look at my parent’s legs. One even went as far as to say, while your parent is here we are only interested in their heart and their lungs. Too bad my parent had a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) which travelled to the lungs and nearly killed my parent!
Whatever happened to holistic care of all patients? Surely they still teach holistic care at University? Why doctors are full of arrogance and behave holier than thou? I for one would have thought that following a total hip replacement the patient is at risk for DVT formation. If that forms bits of it can break off and cause Pulmonary Emboli. This is what happened to my parent. Then, when the doctors were bridging my parent from Heparin to Warfarin my parent kept saying that they had flank pain. Did anyone listen? No, because you were only interested in my parent’s heart and lungs as you had told me previously. My parent ended up with a more than 900mL bleed into their abdominal wall. I wish someone had listened to my parent. I feel the doctors need to stop being so arrogant and remember they are also human.
I think I understand that when a person has a DVT that you don't want them to move around too much. Is this the reason my parent had one shower in seven days?
