"More doctors needed"

About: Royal Melbourne Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had to wait for 8 1/2 hours to see a doctor, I went in at night and left around early hours of the morning. Due to only having one doctor at night, there was a long wait for everyone there. There is need for more doctors at that Emergency Department. I was waiting with my eye full of pus, not able to see well.

Dear hotelfk85,

Thank you for your feedback. Firstly, let me apologise for your wait. As a consequence of your posting I have reviewed the last 12 months median waiting time in our Emergency Department (ED). I can reassure you that the median time to see a clinician is less than an hour. I understand that surge and demand will mean that waiting times for an individual will vary but it would be very uncommon for this time to be in excess of 8 hours. I am very happy to look into your case further and would encourage you to contact our consumer liaison service at the following email address if you would like to do so:

consumerliaison@mh.org.au.

In response to your observation that there was only one doctor on duty, I can reassure that this is not the case. There are several doctors on overnight in the ED every night of the year, and our staffing level is very favourable when compared to other ED's.

I hope that this response provides some explanation and hope that your eye has healed well.

Regards,

Prof George Braitberg
