"Bad experience after total thyroidectomy"

About: Lyell McEwin Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Very bad experience by the end of surgery! I am only now understanding the severity, negligence, the inhumanity, broken promises and other:

During a particular holiday period and people including doctors decide to go on holidays.

During pre-surgery consultation I was ensured I was in the best care and I would receive the best support if the best care was not given.

I felt that the treatment by surgical staff was deplorable just before I went into surgery. They joked around to each other, talking about personal matters.

Post-surgery, the effects of a total thyroidectomy have been mind, body and soul altering in a very negative way, I know now I wasn’t in the best hands.

Right after the operation staff told me I had worried them during the surgery. Sometimes in hospital there was a staff member right by my feet at the end of the bed and one in the middle of the room. They would check if I was ok often waking me up. I was apparently in surgery longer due to my thyroid being like mush. It was meant to be hard. I was told later that it could have been dying.

I was told to leave and had only been in hospital around 24 hours and on a number of occasions I was told I hadn’t had a full thyroidectomy, they told me I had a half thyroidectomy. I assured them I did have a full thyroidectomy! I was even asked after surgery.

I have been knocked back at the Emergency Department and my character was questioned and symptoms left without answers. When I did get seen to I was to wait and had staff tell me my symptoms were normal, that I was being sensitive and much more.

I told them my symptoms, which were left for a doctor to follow up, only to get negative feedback due to me calling or going down to the Emergency Department. In addition I was told that the hospital hadn’t released me from hospital, which they had done.

To this day I am left with no clue how to get through this as I have been doing for over 2 years.

I have requested help, waited to see doctors with little to no results and left feeling it was me.

Today the matter is not resolved with little to no support with my character questioned and much more. The implications after a total thyroidectomy has left me with a disability you didn’t sign up for.
