"Poor treatment at the ED"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Throughout a few months this year, I have been to the Emergency Department (ED) at the Geraldton Hospital 3 times and feel I been treated extremely poorly. I have a known heart condition. The first time I presented to the ED, I had extreme chest and rib pain. I had to get my partner to drive me and I used the wall to hold me up and walk.

I was taken through and had multiple tests. The Doctor said I possibly had a blood clot, then said I had a virus and to go home and rest. I was given a medical certificate for a week, however, wasn't given any pain relief to aid with my pain. I went to see my GP the next day as I wasn't happy with the outcome. He ran more tests.

A few weeks later, I was at my parents' house and started to have a seizure. I could hear and see everything around me but I couldn't talk or move. I have never experienced a seizure before. I was taken to the hospital via ambulance and placed in the waiting room. I developed a cough and had another seizure while in the waiting room. My partner informed the Triage Nurse and I was taken into the Department to one of the corridor beds. A number of nurses checked on me. I had 7 more seizures before I was seen by a doctor. The Doctor did tests and came back and said I brought my seizures on because I am mental and should go see my GP.

I was extremely upset with what the Doctor said. I went to see my GP the next day and he ran more tests to rule out symptoms but I still didn't have answers.

The 3rd time I presented to ED I was extremely unwell. The doctor did thorough tests after I told him I had been told by numerous doctors. They can't tell me why I am so unwell.

I was admitted to the Short Stay Unit overnight. I was seen by the medical team in the morning who wanted me to be admitted to the ward so they can investigate what is going on. I was flown to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital after a week in hospital as I was loosing weight and was bleeding internally. I stayed there for a week.

I was transferred back to Geraldton Hospital via commercial flight with a nurse escort as I wasn't well enough to travel alone. I stayed overnight and then was able to go home under the care of the Hospital In The Home team. I had to get 6 weeks of IV antibiotics through a PICC line.

I haven't been able to work since late April due, I believe, to not receiving treatment sooner. I am extremely upset with the treatment I received and the doctors not taking me seriously even though I have a very serious heart condition. I am still having to rely heavy on others to take me to appointments and will be sometime before I am back to normal again.
