"Feedback on staff behaviour"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

Thank you for considering my feedback. I attended the children’s hospital this week with my stepchild who required an eye exam. On the whole, the facility and services received were excellent.

However, the reason for my complaint is the frankly unprofessional behaviour of a staff member in the neighbouring clinic (I think it was for hearing). I feel that this person was very abrupt and rude to both their colleagues and other families in the waiting area. I did not catch their name. I’m usually fairly tolerant of others and understand public service can be stressful but I feel sorry for the other staff members involved and thought to report the incident in case it is a pattern.

Our visit was otherwise delightful (apart from the wait time).

Dear sculptortg77

I would like to formally apologise for your experience. Within Perth Children’s Hospital, and the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) more broadly, we ask staff to strive to demonstrate our core values of compassion, collaboration, respect, equity, accountability and excellence, in everything they do.For the most part, our staff put a heavy emphasis on striving to exemplify these values through their behaviours and actions; however, the behaviour you witnessed is clearly unacceptable and falls short of showing respect.

We have a program of work, called Living our Values, which is designed to ensure that these values are communicated and lived. Living our Values is a way of making our values visible, meaningful and central to our daily behaviours. By upholding these values, we aim to define CAHS as a centre of excellence, a great place to work and improve the way we work and relate with one another.

Since February, we have had approximately 50 events across our health service to simultaneously celebrate and promote these values. While this does not change the behaviour you witnessed, I wish to reassure you that we are committed to supporting our staff to commit to our values, making the lives of WA children and the community better and CAHS a great place to work.

Kind regards
Dr Aresh Anwar
Chief Executive
Child and Adolescent Health Service
