(as a relative),

I recently came to the hospital to visit my parent who is not well. I was in the parking for 2 hours and 2 minutes and was charged for 3 hours. In my opinion, that is ridiculous! I understand that we need to pay for parking but I feel that charging me for 2 minutes is disgusting. My parent is not well and to top it off you take more money. Thank you for making me more upset. Where is your compassion?

I am sorry to read of your frustrations relating to the cost of parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

Parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital is charged at a rate of $3 per hour (or part thereof), capped at a maximum of $21 a day. The “part thereof” refers to being charged for a further hour as soon as the next hour commences. The charges for parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital are set by the Metropolitan Access and Parking Department, in accordance with the WA Metropolitan Access and Parking Strategy. The Strategy was developed to ensure that people most needing to access a public hospital campus by car are able to do so. FSH parking rates are consistent with this strategy.

Patients can discuss with their areas of treatment the need for assistance with parking fees. Assistance may be required due to a variety of reasons and reduced parking rates are available for FSH patients who meet eligibility criteria. Please encourage your parent to request an assessment regarding eligibility for reduced parking rates with clinical staff during their next appointment.

Very disappointed with this response. Nobody ever wants to be visiting a hospital. My parent was in the ICU for 4 weeks and I did not qualify for cheaper parking. This seems unfair.

Dear loveqk46,

It looks like your parent may have already left our ICU, but if you would like to contact us on 6152 4013 we can investigate what occurred in your situation and whether you should have been eligible for discounted parking. Our Welfare Officer is engaged to meet with relatives of ICU patients in order to make an assessment of whether discount parking vouchers can be provided. This includes an assessment of ability to pay; how unwell the patient is in ICU and their likely length of stay. I am unsure if you participated in this process during your parent's admission.
