(as a friend),

I was shocked that my friend had to pay an hourly rate to park when undergoing chemotherapy at Fiona Stanley Hospital. My friend stated that only private patients didn't need to pay.

I was visiting from overseas where Health Board parking fees were scrapped for all after a campaign by service users. When fees were in force patients and regular visitors of long term inpatients had free parking.

I feel that to be financially penalised for being sick with loss of income is appalling. It adds to the distress of vulnerable people, and, in my opinion, they should be reimbursed. I felt genuinely upset at watching patients queue up to pay, as a Nurse myself I feel that you should show compassion.

I am sorry to read of your friend’s frustrations relating to parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH). Car parks and fees at FSH are managed in accordance with the WA Metropolitan Access and Parking Scheme, which are guidelines set by the State Government. The Strategy was developed to ensure that people most needing to access a public hospital campus by car are able to do so. FSH parking rates are consistent with this strategy.

Patients can discuss with their areas of treatment the need for assistance with parking fees. Assistance may be required due to a variety of reasons and reduced parking rates are available for FSH cancer patients who meet eligibility criteria. Please encourage your friend to request an assessment regarding eligibility for reduced parking rates with clinical staff during their next appointment.
