"My parent's Gall Stone experience"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital

(as a relative),

A few months ago my parent had their first severe Gall Bladder stone attack, was sent to Fiona Stanley Hospital by Ambulance to be sent home hours later with nothing but Oxycodeine with blood pressure as high as 200/100.

Weeks later another attack, this time at the Royal Perth Hospital. My parent was again sent home with pain relief and high blood pressure over 200. This happened twice at Royal Perth, and the surgeon my parent was under listed them as being covered by Private Health, but my parent does not have private health cover.

A month or so later my parent had another Gall Stone attack and was sent again to Royal Perth Hospital with blood pressure 206/100. My parent was sent home with pain relief medication. My parent was so scared to eat, losing another 2.5kgs in a month. I finally rang another hospital telling of my parent's pain and that the care of other hospitals was poor.

Dear doradoqe39,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback so that we might respond to you. I apologise that your parent was wrongly listed as a private patient rather than a public one and that you feel there has been a lack of adequate care. It is difficult to comment on your parent’s treatment without further information. However, if you would like us to look into the treatment that your parent was provided, we would be happy to do this. If this is the case, please contact our Consumer Engagement Unit on 9224 1439 and one of the team will be happy to assist you.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Lesley Bennett

Dear doradoqe39,

I am sorry to hear of your parent’s experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital when attending with gallstone pain (Biliary Colic). This type of pain is treated with analgesia and blood tests are taken to identify if there is any inflammation of the pancreas or bile duct obstruction. If these tests are within normal limits and the patient’s pain is controlled, then it is safe to discharge from the Emergency Department with a prescription for further analgesia in the event there may be a reoccurrence of pain and possibly refer for surgical review in an outpatient clinic.

It is difficult to provide you with a more comprehensive response without knowing more detail about your parent. I would urge you to contact us on 9431 2787 if you would like the matter further investigated

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
