"Urologist referral"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital

(as the patient),

Instead of receiving an appointment to discuss my concerns with a Urologist I have received an appointment for urodynamics before the end of the year. I rang and left a message explaining that I do not require this procedure (used to diagnose incontinence) as it is well documented that I already have it and have been living with it post-surgery for 20yrs.

Recently, I was contacted by a staff member. I explained that I only required a chat with the Urologist, having previously had urodynamics twice before and at this stage, I was not willing to go through that again.

Without having yet discussed my problem with the Urologist, I'm unsure as to whether or not they can even be of future assistance to me. I also explained reasons why I am now loathe to be catherterized unless it's for surgery or an emergency. Not only was the staff member's response fixed and unnegotiable, they told me they doubted that I had ever had urodynamics before as Glengarry doesn't do it. Even after they were aware that I had become upset, they told me that unless I did urodynamics, I couldn't see the Urologist.

I asked the staff member to ask the Urologist if I could just see them for a chat but they refused then made it clear unless I first did urodynamics my appointment with a Urologist would be cancelled.

I said I might have to return to my G.P. for a referral to see another Urologist to which the staff member replied that then I will have to go private. I said that I would need time to think about it. I sincerely believe that when a Urologist is enlightened to my problem they would not even feel the need to send me for urodynamics.

Dear lepustn46,

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns regarding your recent experience with our Urogynaecology Department.

The Women and Newborn Health Service strives to provide quality, patient-centered care and I am sorry that this was not the case on this occasion.

It is our policy to have all patients requiring Urology intervention seen for urodynamics prior to seeing a Urologist. I would like to apologise if this was not clearly and politely explained to you.

I have provided your feedback to the Urogynaecology Department. The Head of Department would like to review your referral and to discuss your options with you. If you would like to further discuss your referral, pleaes contact the Women and Newborn Health Service Customer Service Unit on 6458 1444 and the discussion can be arranged.

Once again, I would like to apologise for any distress that this has caused you and I wish you well for the future.

Kind regards

Jodi

Many thanks for a more positive response, since writing this I have been given an appointment with a urologist.

Very disappointing after already waiting a considerable lengthy period. I've received a text saying my appointment has since been cancelled due to short staff.
