"My adult child stigmatised for mental health illness"

About: PathWest Perth Collection Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

My adult child has a mental health illness and needs to have regular blood tests to check for therapeutic levels of their medication. Yesterday, my child presented at the Reception Desk and was asked to take a seat. The environment was calm, my child was very relaxed and I told the nurse that I had faxed the pathology request the day before.

Then another nurse walked past and nodded me on my shoulder saying that from now on, I had to accompany my child while their bloods were taken and that staff were going to call security to come over to assist. My child became angry that security was called and asked the staff member at the desk what they had done wrong to justify the request for security attendance. My child did not receive a satisfactory answer and was told to sit and wait. My child had their blood test without conflict. I feel the whole process was unnecessarily very stressful for my child and myself. We will be attending a different pathology centre from now onwards.

Dear ozitis,

I am sorry to hear of your experience whilst attending our Collection Centre. I do appreciate that you have taken the time to provide feedback, as it is important that we ensure all of our staff treat our customers equally, and with courtesy and respect. In this instance, I apologise that your child was made to feel singled out and uncomfortable.

I would like to ask that you contact our Manager of Specimen Collection Services, Mrs Elaine Toogood, on 0413 611 192 so that we can obtain further details of your visit and follow up with the personnel involved.

Kind regards

Tracy
