"Waiting for an endoscopy"

About: Armadale Hospital

(as the patient),

A few years ago I had an endoscopy for digestive issues and chronic Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD). Severe erosion and ulcers were found and Barrett's syndrome was diagnosed. I made some lifestyle adjustments and have been feeling much improved.

The GP and specialist recommended a followup endoscopy in a few years' time as Barrett's syndrome is linked to esophageal cancer. The GP sent a referral in early 2019 and Armadale Hospital accepted it and sent a letter saying expect a 3-month wait. I received a phone call about a month ago asking if I still required this procedure and I stated yes I did.

I received a letter recently saying that they had been trying to contact me by phone from a private number. I was away with work so I called when I returned to arrange and was told that because I had not called them within 10 days from the date on the letter I was removed from the waiting list. I now have to get a referral from my GP and go through the whole process again!

It's so frustrating! I feel that 10 days from the generation of the letter is not long enough. They had my mobile number so why not send a text. I don't have a message service on my phone and tend not to answer private numbers as they are usually trying to sell you things.

Dear augustym43,

Thank you for sharing your story. I can fully appreciate your frustration and can understand you may be anxious to get another appointment. WA Health does have a number of processes and policies in place aimed at ensuring we can be as effective as possible in providing access to services. Acknowledging this, we know we must also recognise every patient individually.

I am confident we can assist you, if you contact our Consumer Liaison Office on 9391 1153 and provide your details. The Coordinator of Nursing will be able to call and arrange an appointment for your procedure. This will also provide an opportunity for us to learn further from your experience and, most importantly, ensure you have appropriate access to timely care.

I apologise for the distress you have experienced and hope the above presents a way forward.

Kind regards

Di Barr
