"Clinical treatment"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

A few months ago I started experiencing difficulty breathing, each time I inhaled I experienced severe pain, which seemed to get worse each minute. Three weeks prior I just had major surgery on my right lung therefore, I was quite concerned.

I rang the ambulance and they were fantastic, and got me through to the hospital immediately.

Once at the Emergency Department at Rockingham General Hospital, I explained about my operation a few weeks earlier. I was X-rayed and given pain killers. I feel the pain killers did not work.

I was then left in a cubicle for about 5 hours, however the medical team did come and let me know they were quite busy that night.

Nothing could be done to relieve the pain, so I was told to go home and make an appointment to see my GP in the week.

My spouse took me to another hospital, within 30 minutes they had a drip in me, treating me for pneumonia in my left lung.

I felt like I was thrown in the too hard basket at Rockingham.

Dear sculptorxf65,

I am sorry to hear of your experience within the Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) Emergency Department (ED). I advise that it is a priority for our staff to endeavour to see all patients within certain time frames and to always ensure that our patients are given ongoing information as to their care.

Generally if there is a delay in attending to you it would be due to the number of priority patients in the ED at that time, however I’d like to reassure you that it is normal practice for nursing staff to perform ongoing observations on all patients during the time that you are waiting to see a medical practitioner. This allows for the medical staff to be notified should your condition change or deteriorate.

I am concerned that you left the hospital still feeling unwell and I would urge you to contact the Consumer Liaison department on 9599 4632 so that the hospital can investigate your presentation more thoroughly.

I hope and trust that you are recovering well.

Kind regards,

Heather Pearce

A/Executive Director
