"Our birthing experience"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

Recently, I went into the Broome hospital due to my water breaking the day before, and I had to be induced. During my labor I had several midwives coming in, they were understaffed and very busy. After many, many hours of contractions  I requested the anesthesiologist for the epidural.

The doctor was frustrated as they did not have enough space for their equipment to perform work quickly. Straight after the birth I quickly had to move into another room because there is only two birthing ensuites. My partner and I were lucky to get a private room, the other rooms were shared with four or five beds. I can't imagine having to share a room with a bunch of strangers, trying to learn to breastfeed, whilst having breasts exposed in front of other new mum's partners.

The rooms were tiny and very old, my partner and I couldn't wait to go home but the staff were so busy they weren't able to complete general check ups -  and all we could do was wait. I believe being the busiest town in the Kimberly's, the maternity ward I feel needs to be updated with larger private rooms and larger birthing ensuites. Other hospitals I feel are a lot nicer so Broome should be at the same standard. Also I feel more staff would make it run better.

Dear indigomf36,

Thank you for sharing your story about your time in the Maternity Unit at Broome Hospital. I was saddened to read about your experience. I know how precious this time is and I am very sorry for this.

We are aware that the facilities are old and we are currently looking at options to resolve this. We would love to be able to offer a single room to every birthing mother, but we have to work with the resources that are currently available to us.

Unfortunately, aside from issues regarding funding, the Broome site is landlocked. This means that there are very few options available for us to expand and we are limited to refitting and re-configuring the existing space, which we are planning for at the moment.

I acknowledge your concern in relation to feeling that the Unit was understaffed during your stay with us. As is the nature of maternity services, activity in the Unit can be unpredictable. We do work hard to ensure that we have a flexible staff roster that can cater for the unpredictability of need and have the option to ask for assistance from other wards in the hospital to support us, where it is appropriate to do so.

I’m not sure when you stayed with us, so this makes it hard to know what was happening on the ward in relation to staffing. That said, if you are happy to contact us we can certainly review your case and see what we could have perhaps done differently. Please feel free to contact Helen Fullarton, who is the Coordinator Nursing & Midwifery. Helen can be contacted via email at helen.fullarton@health.wa.gov.au or by phoning 08 9194 2855 and will look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, again, Indigomf36. Your story will help us to improve and grow our services so we can better meet the needs of our patients their families and carers into the future.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Wendy
