"Poor staff behaviour"

About: PathWest Broome Collection Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

My infant child had to have a blood test. I felt the staff were very rude and unwelcoming and were not professional and were talking about having a try/crack to get the blood taken from my child.

Also, I believe they did not clean their hands (did not wash their hands or used the alcohol rub) and when I asked them to clean the skin after they have touched it, they became very unfriendly in my opinion. Then we were being sent out to wait for the Dr as they have failed to get the blood needed for the tests required. We waited for more than an hour and because of the long wait we asked if we can have a numbing patch so that my child is not in pain when the Dr tried again and they told me they don't have it (how could this be possible, this is a Pathology Lab).

I didn't feel good about the care that my child has received also not to mention that pain I was in as a parent watching my little child screaming and in pain. I think staff need to have more empathy for the patients (it is definitely needed in the health industry).

Dear hoteldb74,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at our collection rooms in Broome. As a parent myself I appreciate it is an anxious time when any medical intervention is performed on a small child. I understand that these collections may be difficult and stressful, and I am concerned that you felt our staff were lacking in empathy, and may also not have performed appropriate hand hygiene. In order to investigate this incident properly, could I please ask that you contact our Regional General Manager, Mrs Marion Cutforth on 6457 7230, so as to provide some further details. This will enable us to fully investigate and respond to your concerns appropriately.

Kind regards,

Tracy Dixon

Acting General Manager
