"The poor quality of food"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

I have been in the hospital quite a few times over many years due to the fact that I have cancer. Over the years, I think the standard of food patients receive is of very poor quality.

I sent many meals back because I felt they were inedible I resorted to getting my spouse to bring me Vegemite sandwiches because the food was so disgusting.

People staying in the hospital are there because they have either had surgery, or they have an illness so I feel they need to receive decent food to recover. I could not even get a decent sandwich. I believe they are quite obviously pre-made and kept in a cool room so when the patient receives them they are soggy, so soggy that they fall apart when you pick them up. The standard of food really is appalling and I feel big changes need to be made.

After staying in 10 days, I was moved to a rehabilitation facility. Well, what a pleasant surprise the food there was. I spent 14 days there and the food was absolutely beautiful. I had a good choice of meals, they were always hot when you received them, and they were delicious.

I feel something needs to be done about the standard of food patients are receiving because what you receive to eat now is disgusting. Quite honestly I feel we feed our pet dogs better.

Dear songthrushyn96,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback about the catering service you received during several hospital stays. I hope that you are staying well.

I am extremely disappointed to hear that we’ve failed to meet your expectations with food during your stays and would request you contact Catering Manager- Patient Meals, Stephen on (08) 6457 4521 to enable him to investigate.

Stephen and his team survey patients monthly and the hospital prides itself on 80 per cent overall satisfaction rates. We also conduct monthly taste tests of the menu with staff from a range of areas including nursing, speech pathology, dietetics and others to aim to ensure the greatest amount of taste whilst still meeting the necessary dietary requirements of patients.

If you are in hospital again, please speak directly with the catering staff when you place your order or find your food is not to your satisfaction. Recognising that taste sensations and appetites may change when we are sick and/or on medication, we will make best endeavours to meet your needs including making a Vegemite sandwich if that’s all that you desire.

Kind regards,

Janet Zagari.
