"Lack of communication"

About: Armadale Hospital / Operating Theatre & Recovery

(as the patient),

Saw a specialist over 18 months ago and operation was agreed. Rang Armadale Hospital to enquire on wait times, and I was told the specialist no longer had operating rights and suggested I get another referral for this procedure. Local GP has referred me to another hospital and have been waiting six months to see a specialist, and was told as the operation was not life threatening, it could be about 2 years to get the job done.

As a public patient I expect to wait, and will do so, but the original surgeon has not contacted us or any of their patients to inform them they no longer have operating rights. Had I not rang to enquire at the hospital, I would never have known. From day one until the operation, I feel it could be 6 years of waiting.

Dear capricornusmb67,

Thank you for sharing your experience in accessing a specialist appointment at Armadale Hospital. It sounds extremely frustrating. Firstly let me apologise for the communication you have received. This does not align with our expectations. It concerned me to hear your experience as we have introduced process at Armadale to ensure staff movements do not impact negatively on wait times and access to service.

By way of background; In your example, our normal process would be to transfer all patients on that surgeon’s waitlist to another available surgeon.

I would like to review in more detail your journey. If you are willing to contact the Consumer Liaison Officer on 9391 1153 and expand discussion it would be greatly appreciated. This would assist us in reviewing your experience to fully understand what went wrong and most importantly how we can prevent this situation moving forward.

Again, please accept our apologies and thank you for taking time to share your experience.

Di Barr
