I would like to comment on the condition of the Children's Ward. Over the last couple of years, the hospital has undergone an amazing transformation and rebuild, the new parts of the hospital are amazing. However I am disappointed that the Children's Ward has not received any type of improvement other than a coat of paint. Due to my child's genetic disorder, we have been "frequent flyers" on the kid's ward with multiple admissions a year. The staff are absolutely brilliant, they do an amazing job with the children and parents.
But I feel the ward itself is disappointing, to say the least. I find the toilets and bathrooms are creepy for an adult, never mind a child. The bath is so old it has become "chalky" so it never looks clean even though it is. In my recent stay there, I found that the public toilet down the end of the corridor near the door has a dodgy lock on it so I wasn't even sure the door was locked while I was in there.
I believe the design is outdated and the nurses are only able to see one patient from their desk. The airconditioning is erratic and I understand it picks up the air from one room and transports it to another room, therefore, spreading germs throughout the ward. The windows leak - in winter some of the rooms are absolutely freezing and this has at times hindered my child's recovery. They have also come out of there sometimes with other illnesses which I am sure is down to the airconditioning (e.g. we've gone in there for something and they have come out with a cough or snotty nose that they didn't have going in is one example).
It's disheartening to see one part of the hospital is so amazing and our kids get, what I feel is, a creepy, old, dated, inadequate space to try to heal in. The staff do an amazing job with the tools they have available to them however I do feel for them having to work in such an environment and as for the kids, it is bad enough having to be in hospital, I feel they deserve a better environment in which to heal in.
I respectfully request that something is urgently done to improve the facilities in the kid's ward to raise the standards to be that of the renovated parts of the hospital and give our kids a healthy, uplifting place to heal.
