My child started to get severe ear infections when they were a few months old. They reoccurred and before long, their eardrums were completely destroyed. They had a 50db hearing deficit, and although a very happy toddler, they were non-verbal.
My child had to undergo painful myringoplasties to restore their hearing, but they still weren't talking 1 year later. We had extensive therapies with the wonderful team at Population Health for many years. I thought my child would never ever speak. We learned to communicate with sign language. Then my child was diagnosed with a significant developmental delay, not only with speech but with fine and gross motor skills. It was a trying time.
Then, one day, at age 4, my child started to speak. I couldn't believe it, I was so relieved! We plugged on with therapies, and soon they were riding a bike with no trainer wheels, hopping, jumping, climbing! Trying to draw, cut with scissors, join in games!
It has been a long journey, 5 years, with the Child Health Team. They have been wonderful. I simply cannot thank them enough. I doubt my child would have started talking without first learning to sign. I want them to know how much it means to us.
P.S - Sorry we were late for so many appointments.
