"System for booking a CT scan"

About: Esperance Health Campus

(as the patient),

I went to book in for a CT Scan at Esperance Hospital and was told I couldn’t make an appointment but would have to wait for a phone call from them. I don’t know why they can’t take bookings or make an appointment when a person presents with their booking form from their doctor.

I was also told that someone else was in line for a CT Scan and that’s why I couldn’t be given an appointment. This seems like an ineffective and inefficient way to run a hospital department and whilst we do have access to a CT Scanner, we don’t have access to having a CT Scan. I feel this is also concerning for those who are worried that they have a serious problem such as a brain tumour that would be better treated early rather than left for goodness knows how long.

Dear Resident,

Upon reading your story this morning I went and spoke with our senior medical imaging technologist regarding the referral process, as I don't believe we explained this very well at all to you. We also did not consider how you will have been feeling, I do apologise for this.

1. All referrals for CT Scans must be reviewed by a medical imaging technologist

2. The reason for this is that the preparation for the CT Scan will depend on what sort of CT Scan you are having.

3. An Emergency CT Scan will be a priority over an outpatient CT Scan and this is dependant on what the GP has requested, emergencies are done within 24 hours, the current wait time is 3 to 7 days.

From your feedback we will discuss with the staff how important it is they explain the process and that you are made aware that you will be given an appointment with 24-48 hours if not urgent.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and I do hope you now have your appointment. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have further queries on 9079 8071.

Kind regards,

Margaret Smilie

Update posted by Resident (the patient)

Hi Margaret

Thank you you for your response but it is still not clear. You state that a non urgent wait time is 3-7 days but a non urgent appointment should be made in 24-48 hours. I am not clear on how the urgency is determined? I have not yet received any contact from the hospital to make an appointment and this morning would have been 48 hours since I presented with the referral.

Thank You

Dear Resident,

I do apologise that what I have sent to you is not clear. Can I please ask you to call me on 9079 8071 and I will be able to follow up on your referral.

The Senior Medical Imaging Technologist has since spoken with the other Medical Imaging staff and they have taken on board your feedback. From this, the process has now been reviewed and improved for how soon we can advise patients of their appointments and now in some cases, we will do that straight away.

So thank you so much for sharing your experience as this has made a difference.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards

Margaret Smillie
