"Terrible treatment I received"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I am an older adult who suffers from deep depression and Post Traumatic Stress and am under the Older Adult Mental Health located at another hospital.

This took place recently. I should add the test results were not to hand.

Without a word of a lie my day started off with me losing balance twice causing me to fall down. I had called the after-hours Doctor service who do house calls for those who are in need. I advised them I was feeling very light-headed, had eaten two full meals for the first time in four weeks, one on 2 days prior and the other the day prior. I had not urinated for at least 3 days and hadn't had a bowel movement in 5 to 6 days as I wasn't able to stomach food at all. With that info they told me to get to a hospital.

Being too unsteady, was not able to get myself to the hospital so thought I would hope my symptoms would clear up but they didn't.

Mid-morning, after the two falls, I called the hospital who said they would send an ambulance out immediately which arrived half an hour later to take me to the Royal Perth Hospital. I arrived there and was immediately seen and a number of tests were taken including blood tests and X-rays and was told they could not proceed further until they had the results back.

The psychiatrist was called to talk to me. They advised the doctor who had been attending to me that they were most concerned about my mental health and should be looked after by the psychiatrist's staff while waiting on the results of the blood test and X-ray. The doctor agreed and then I was moved to the emergency Psychiatric area while waiting for a bed in the Psychiatric ward.

It was ensured I was taking in fluid and it was then late afternoon I ate my first meal of the day, a salad sandwich.

Come evening I was given my normal medication and fell asleep.

The next thing I know, it was late at night with me being awoken by the night shift psychiatrist who asked me what I wanted to do. I said once the test results were back, I would like to go home. This psychiatrist went away and the next thing I know is a nurse was ordering me out of bed, to get dressed as I was being discharged so, there I was walking around outside the hospital not knowing how to get to any public transport and not having my wallet containing cash and my debit card.

I went back into Emergency and complained about the treatment I had been shown. They made a couple of phone calls and demanded I was given some sort of assistance being either of me being able to stay until the morning or given a cab charge to get me home. Thankfully a cab charge card was given to me.

I want to save another person receiving the same treatment in the future.

I have since gone back home.

Dear Aussie41353,

I am very sorry to hear of your experience at RPH. It sounds as if the staff did not take care to ensure you had a way of getting home and did not discuss your test results with you.

Please accept my sincere apology for this. This does not meet our expected standards or usual practices.

Staff are trained to check with patients to make sure they can get home safely, and understand the results of their tests and any follow up health care they might need.

I can reassure you that we are constantly reviewing any complaints, patient opinion stories and other feedback about the emergency department to guide service improvement and your story will provide valuable feedback to the team.

Thank you for sharing your story, and again, please accept my apology for your experience.

A/Prof Grant Waterer
