"My parent was abused"

About: Regis Inala Village

(as a relative),

I feel that 19 miserable months in Regis destroyed my parent.

I believe one carer was extremely bad-tempered and abused my parent on at least 3 occasions and management ignored my reports because I didn’t have power of attorney.

One day I called in to find my parent in their underwear sitting in the dining room surrounded by other residents having dinner. My parent was crying and unable to speak. The carer complained my parent took too long and aggressively forced my parent from their room to the dining room in their underwear.

I complained and sought an explanation from management who I felt evaded my calls and never gave me an explanation nor apology to my parent.

I believe my parent was frequently medicated, would be dopy, falling asleep as I spoke to them. Management refused to tell me what medication it was.

I believe my parent became extremely depressed and wanted out of Inala. They were taken to hospital with a major stroke and the manager offered no explanation. After my parent died, I sought an explanation. I believe this person evaded my calls for many weeks, telling me they would call back, that they were in a meeting or couldn’t talk to me because they didn’t have my parent’s file in hand.

Not once did they even offer the cliché expression of sympathy that I had lost my parent. By force, I obtained a meeting many weeks later. The manager, supported by another manager, quickly read their report and refused to answer any questions, refused me access to my parent's file and doctor’s report. What I learned was that my parent was physically restrained and medicated for allegedly hitting another resident, (management refused to reveal what medication used).

My parent was put in bed and the next morning found paralysed with a major stroke. In the restraint, my parent suffered a broken thigh bone but the manager claimed staff weren’t aware it had happened. The stroke left my parent permanently paralysed. I believe my parent decided they didn’t want to live, refused all food and medication and died about 2 weeks later. The delayed death certificate read that they died from malnutrition.
