Maternity ward

Recently, my relative had her baby. The nursing staff where really helpful in the labour, very caring and also very professional in their job which I find them to be very hard workers.

The thing about the ward is that I believe it's very small, plus I think the hard workers don't have a lunch room close by which is very sad because they seem to have to eat their lunch at the desk. I feel this is sad because they need time out in peace to unwind from the hard work they do for these women who are in labour and the new mums in the ward.

Plus another thing I didn't like is that the mental health ward is close by and I believe it shouldn't be.  I know they have a security door which people do go in out of every minute which I feel can be very stressful.

In my opinion, the waiting room area is very small which only two people can sit and I feel it needs to be bigger.

So I hope you take the time to look at these little comments I have made and help our nurses out in their working environment because I feel they need to be looked after to with the long hours of work that they do.

Dear M72,

Thank you for making the time to post about your experience at Broome Hospital.

It is always lovely to hear positive feedback about our staff and I have let the Maternity team know of the compliment you have paid them, as well as the fact that you have posted, advocating for their working environment/conditions to be changed.

I agree that the Maternity Unit is very small, and we have plans to refurbish the birth suites to improve the use and flow of the space. We expect to see this upgrade soon. Unfortunately, the Unit cannot be expanded in size, given its location.

In respect of meal facilities, staff have access to a dining room and that it is within less than a minute's walk from the Unit. It is not always practical to step away from a Unit, depending on the activity and staffing levels on any given day. Independent eyes and ears are always helpful and, from your feedback, we have started to think about the storage spaces in the Unit itself and how we can reconfigure them to provide a quiet space for staff that can't step away for their meal due to clinical needs.

In regards to the Mental Health Unit being onsite, I do understand your concern. Of course, having a mental health condition does not automatically mean that someone will be a danger to the community. Many are very vulnerable themselves, and they are deserving of the best care. Being co-located with a hospital allows for better coordination and a holistic approach to that care.
