Late last year, my GP referred me to the visiting dermatologist at Hedland Health Campus due to a suspected Squamous Cell Carcinoma near my eye. My GP did not feel it was appropriate for them to attempt to remove this lesion due to its location and as there is a visiting specialist (one a month excluding December and January), my GP informed me that I was not eligible for PATS assistance to have this treated.
I followed up immediately with Outpatients and was told that the referral would be sent to the dermatologist who would decide on the urgency and schedule. I was informed that the earliest available clinic appointment would be in a few months time.
Having heard nothing since I called Outpatients, I recently called and was informed that nobody was in the office who could assist me with my query as the regular staff member was away. I followed up again and was informed that the dermatologist would not review my referral until they visit (which was the date of the clinic appointment date I was given) and then I would be offered an appointment at one of the clinics in the following months.
Living in the north of WA I am incredibly disappointed that our access to treatment for skin cancer is so limited. If the visiting specialist can not assist patients in a timely manner, why are we restricted from accessing PATS for treatment? A delay of 3 or more months can have a big impact on the treatment/outcome of skin cancer. Not everyone in Hedland can afford to travel to Perth without PATS.
