"Access to dermatology/skin cancer treatment"

About: Hedland Health Campus

(as the patient),

Late last year, my GP referred me to the visiting dermatologist at Hedland Health Campus due to a suspected Squamous Cell Carcinoma near my eye. My GP did not feel it was appropriate for them to attempt to remove this lesion due to its location and as there is a visiting specialist (one a month excluding December and January), my GP informed me that I was not eligible for PATS assistance to have this treated.

I followed up immediately with Outpatients and was told that the referral would be sent to the dermatologist who would decide on the urgency and schedule. I was informed that the earliest available clinic appointment would be in a few months time.

Having heard nothing since I called Outpatients, I recently called and was informed that nobody was in the office who could assist me with my query as the regular staff member was away. I followed up again and was informed that the dermatologist would not review my referral until they visit (which was the date of the clinic appointment date I was given) and then I would be offered an appointment at one of the clinics in the following months.

Living in the north of WA I am incredibly disappointed that our access to treatment for skin cancer is so limited. If the visiting specialist can not assist patients in a timely manner, why are we restricted from accessing PATS for treatment? A delay of 3 or more months can have a big impact on the treatment/outcome of skin cancer.  Not everyone in Hedland can afford to travel to Perth without PATS.

Dear pegasuszh34,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with the Outpatient Department at Hedland Health Campus.

I would firstly like to assure you that in instances where a person requires an emergency appointment for a visiting specialist who is not available immediately, the referring practitioner has other options available to them. These options are dependent on the specific circumstances of the patient and can be explored by the referring practitioner in consultation with the Outpatient Department Manager.

That being said, the unclear communication that you have encountered is not acceptable and falls below the standard of service we seek to deliver. Clear communication with our patients is central to providing efficient healthcare. This seems to not have happened in your case and I apologise for this; it could not have been easy to deal with on top of the possibility of a Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Please know that I will be sharing your story to remind all staff of the importance of providing correct information and consistent communication.

I wholeheartedly agree with you about the need to provide timely care regardless of the geographical location of the patient. We are undertaking an outpatient reform project across the region and would like to offer you the opportunity to join this group so that the consumer voice is represented. If this is something you would be interested in joining please contact us on 9174 1040.

I am advised that you have been in contact with our Safety & Quality team, and have now been given a date and time for your appointment. If you have any further feedback or queries, please feel free to contact me via WACHS-Pilbara.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au or on 9174 1040. Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us and I wish you the very best of health.

Kind regards,

Yvonne Bagwell,

A/Operation Manager, East Pilbara

WA Country Health Service
