I am a senior health professional but found myself on holiday in Busselton when my baby fell out of their pram onto concrete.
I was obviously upset when presenting to ED-the triage nurse and nurse manager were extremely attentive, quick to assess my baby, thorough, and accurate in their triage score. They went out of their way to reassure me and to ensure that I, as the mother, felt ok about what had happened.
At the time the dept was not busy so I was seen by the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) almost immediately (very kind of them considering I was upset). The SMO was also extremely thorough in their assessment. Even though to a bystander it may have looked like the SMO was just chatting to me, as a health care professional, I was aware they were fully assessing my baby for any signs of head injury with their questions but also their visual observations of my baby whilst chatting to me. and they put me at ease with their competence and patience immediately.
In all, it was an extremely positive experience at the ED, impressively efficient (I’m thankful they were not busy at the time), and I was taken seriously with my concerns. I was not made to feel like I was overreacting in any way.
Very thankful for the care that was delivered.
