"Alcohol Recovery"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Last year, I was admitted to emergency at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) about 10 times. Most often, I was in an alcoholic blackout on the streets of Perth, being a serial pest and disturbing the peace. Since my parent died agonisingly of cancer some years ago, I had lost all hope and found a temporary escape in the bottle.

The nurses at RPH, without exception, were kind and caring to me while I was in this most unlovely state. I just wanted to express my gratitude to them and also the doctors and orderlies.

I am now 80 days sober and am practising an active recovery program based around AA and my spiritual beliefs.

Thank you for your service, care, and professionalism - it has made a huge difference to me in my life.

Dear blackbirdgr69,

Thank you so much for sharing this story. I recognise this may have been difficult for you. I sincerely appreciate your time and effort to thank the staff.

Emergency Department staff don’t often get to find out the outcome of their good work, they were very grateful to hear they had a positive influence on your life.

I am delighted to hear that you are 80 days sober and actively engaging in a program to improve your health. I wish you success with this journey.

Sincerely,

Prof Grant Waterer

A/Executive Director
