"Apathy at the Hospital Emergency"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Arrived one night recently worried about clotting of blood in my mouth after a major extraction earlier in the day.  I attended this hospital and apathy is the word that comes to mind.

Advised by the nurse that there was 1 person ahead of me. I was in that waiting room which was, in my opinion, ugly and depressing, for close to 5 hours and did not get to meet a doctor.

I was one of 4 patients who eventually left, I believe, without being treated.

When I enquired when I might be seen by a doctor, I was advised by the triage nurse that I had the option to leave. I feel this is disgraceful behaviour by a health professional. I believe consultation were being administered routinely in the waiting area which was shambolic and unprofessional in my opinion.

Dear skyhz57,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding your recent experience in the Emergency Department (ED) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). I am very sorry to hear that your encounter when attending the ED was not a positive one and that you felt that the staff did not communicate with you in a professional manner.

We believe that every patient should feel cared for as well as receiving the very best in clinical care and it is important that we receive feedback when the patient experience is not what it should be.

I will provide your feedback to the ED so that they consider ways to improve how they keep patients informed of their choices when there is a delay in being assessed.

Once again, thank you for feeding back your experience of our services as it is important to us that we consistently try and improve the care we provide.

Kind regards

Amanda McKnight

Thanks for your positive response, I hope my comments help, hopefully CGH Emergency Department (ER) will recognise that patients are your clients and not to be treated in an offhand manner, hopefully improvements will follow.
