"Pathology"

About: PathWest Northam Collection Centre

(as the patient),

I drove 40 minutes to Northam Hospital for a test, only to find out when I arrived that I was meant to fast for 8 hours! I did phone the day before to ask about anything I needed to do for the test and they said nothing, just come in. They did not mention anything about fasting.

I seriously think you need to communicate because that just wasted half my day and petrol.

Dear arahm48,

I am very sorry that you had this frustrating experience at our Northam Collection Centre. I will contact the Medical Scientist in Charge of our Northam Laboratory about this matter.

Can you please tell me did you contact the PathWest Laboratory at the hospital or the Grey Street Collection Centre? I will reply as soon as I have a response from the Medical Scientist In Charge.

Kind regards,

Martin Taylor

Acting Operations Manager, Regional Services Network

Thanks once again for your valuable feedback. It appears that in this instance our communication was inadequate and I apologise.

Our staff member does remember your call and was aware that fasting was needed for the test you enquired about but was not able to communicate it before the call ended. They had no way of contacting you to pass that information on subsequently. I have spoken to the staff member concerned myself and they had been counselled to communicate such vital information clearly in the future. I again apologise for the frustration you experienced and for the wasted time and resources that resulted from this failure of communication.
