"Medication- care with dosage"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I accidentally took a double dose of a medication I take to treat my symptoms of Parkinsons Disease and REM Behaviour Disorder. Realising that this medication impacts the brain and that an overdose could possibly result in serious side effects I contacted the  Poisons Information Centre where it was explained I should go to my local hospital, St George Public.

I arrived at the hospital late at night. Triage was quick and efficient. Although there was a bit of a wait, I felt the atmosphere was one of calm and efficiency. I was Fast-Tracked and saw a nurse who was friendly and reassuring. I was seen by a junior doctor, Dr Mark. It was very obvious to me that my situation was taken seriously by all staff with whom I interacted. I was advised that an overnight stay would allow for further observation and monitoring.

Special thanks to nurse Ali who, when it was decided I stay in hospital overnight, made sure I was comfortable in the bed. He was friendly and caring and gave the impression he had plenty of time to address any concerns or issues I had. He inspired confidence that I would be well looked after. Thank you Ali. In my opinion, you are an asset to the Emergency Dept.

During the early hours of the morning I was moved to a"quiet room'', the purpose being to encourage sleep.  I thank Dr Mark who, throughout the night, continued to check on me. He was willing to go the extra step, indicating he would contact my neurologist if necessary. He answered questions I had, was reassuring and caring - exhibiting a concerned "bedside" manner (always appreciated). Another great asset to the hospital.

Before discharge I was given a final check-up for any possible unknown, unwanted side effects or conditions. Thank you Dr Lewis for your thoroughness and your informative discharge notes
