"Carnarvon Hospital"

About: Carnarvon Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

We were on holiday in Western Australia from London in the United Kingdom in a group of 11 all of whom work in the medical field from Orthopaedic Surgeons,  Neurologists, Cardiologist and an Anaesthesiologist.

We were wanting to go to the north to see the Ningaloo whale sharks before travelling on the train across Australia. On our last evening, we had dinner and were sitting in the outdoor pool area when one of the group was experiencing chest pain and it was examined by a member of our group.  An ambulance was called to our hotel to our surprise it arrived in only 5 maybe 6 minutes!

These paramedics knew exactly what the problem was and what to do and our group's cardiologist was extremely impressed with their skills.

About fifteen minutes later, the member (patient) was in the Carnarvon Hospital and their medical team was discussing with our Cardiologist again what they were about to do. Our group's Cardiologist and others were totally amazed about the running of the Emergency centre at the hospital saying "they operated that hospital that day to a level in line, if not better, than our own bloody medical centres in London".

Days later, the hospital had learnt of our group and then advised the doctors of who they were and everyone was grateful for the hospital's tremendous work.

Asked if they were happy with the service from the small town hospital's service, our group all said, "too bloody right we are happy, thank you Carnarvon medical teams".

We made the train and enjoyed our Australian stay.

Months later, during an international medical conference in London, members of our group were using the Carnarvon hospital experience as an example to where we here in the UK need to be aiming towards.

Furthermore, three members of this group have since indicated they will be going back to the town to return the favour in amazing assistance which they had received.

Dear London meets Australian small town hospital,

Thank you so much for your story regarding Carnarvon Hospital. This story has been shared with the Carnarvon Hospital and St John Ambulance teams.

It is fantastic to hear that care provided in Carnarvon, a small remote town, 910 km north of Perth, has been discussed at an international medical conference in London.

It means a lot to provide this type of feedback to our staff who strive every day to provide excellent clinical care to patients, regardless of the vast distances experienced in remote Western Australia. We are so pleased that your friend and colleague received the treatment they needed and your group was able to experience the whale sharks and the beautiful countryside we have in our backyard, in northern Western Australia.

It is awesome to hear you will be heading back in our direction soon. We would appreciate you getting in touch with us so we can meet up in person when you are here. I am sure the doctors and clinicians in town would be keen to share experiences with you.

If you would like to get in touch I would encourage you to contact Tamara Sweeney, Operations Manager Gascoyne, on +61 8 9941 0300 who is based in Carnarvon and can link you in with the clinical team.

All the best and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Kind regards

Michele
