"Discrimination"

About: Carnarvon Government Dental Clinic Carnarvon Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation

(as the patient),

I am a client of the Carnarvon Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation (CMSAC) and have dental problems, and also currently suffering from toothaches. I was referred to to the Government-funded dentist as a priority by the Senior Medical Officer at CMSAC.

The dentist is funded to provide the service at CMSAC once a week. Patients who have been listed as "priority" go to the top of the list and are seen in that clinic.

I was told by the referring Doctor that I would be seen by the dentist, as they'd made the priority referral. The Doctor stipulated that I must be waiting at the CMSAC service in the morning to be there as soon as the service opened. I was waiting at the gate for it to open, to ensure I was on time to be seen as I was in a lot of pain.

Once the doors were open and we were let inside, I noticed there was already another person sitting in the waiting area, who obviously had been let into the clinic through another staff entry. This person was called through to the dentist before me. Myself and a number of other people with doctor referrals were not seen by the dentist that day, despite having the doctors referrals. I believe we were discriminated against by not only the Government-funded Dentist but also by CMSAC.

I have since discovered that this blatant discrimination is a common practice at CMSAC, as I believe they usually let their friends or family in via the staff entry, and the rest of the community miss out on much needed Health Services.

Dear jazzzm45,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding access to the dental clinic at the Carnarvon Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation (CMSAC). I am sorry to hear that you felt you were discriminated against. DHS is committed to empathy, kindness and compassion for all those who seek our care.

Dental Health Services (DHS) provides a dentist and dental assistant to the CMSAC on a rostered basis, to provide dental care to CMSAC clients. The CMSAC is responsible for organising the appointments of patients on the day that the DHS dental team is in attendance. The DHS dental team provide treatment to patients based on the appointment list provided by the CMSAC.

The DHS General Manager will make contact with the CMSAC to discuss your experience and the priority appointment process. Your discrimination concerns will be raised.

I hope your toothache has been fixed, and you are no longer experiencing any pain. If not, please be aware that if you are ever in pain with toothache, and an appointment is not available at the CMSAC, you may contact the Carnarvon Government Dental Clinic on 9441 6690 which may be able to assist you with urgent dental care.

Once again, I am sorry that you did not receive the dental care you required on that day.

Kind Regards,

Roslyn Elmes, Executive Director, Mental Health, Public Health & Dental Services, North Metropolitan Health Service
