"Pregnancy and birth"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Overall, I had a delightful birth experience at KEMH. Baby's delivery ended with a prompt Code Blue C-section. However, I felt so reassured by the team's ability and felt in capable hands.

As a high-risk pregnancy I felt like I was appropriately managed at the hospital and treated very well. Never was I left to make clinical decisions without education, my consent was always informed and valid even whilst being rushed to the OT.

The staff were not just clinically appropriate but also incredibly supportive. I felt so empowered and capable throughout the induction and labour process so I can't thank the whole team enough.

The only negative feedback I could give is

 - On 2 occasions handover was not at bedside. This is not really a big issue especially as I was in for days but it's nice to be involved and be able to provide clarification where staff members were unsure.

- Imaging (ultrasound) has a corkboard dedicated to educating fat/'obese' women of their risks during pregnancy. I found this to be alarming and insensitive. Face to face education would have been much nicer, this board wasn't needed. Fat women know there are potential issues that may arise from having a high BMI and heading to an ultrasound they don't need to be reminded things may not go as plan.

Dear Mamamito,

Firstly I would like to extend my congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your child – such a lovely and exciting time for you all. Thank you for the time you have taken to provide feedback regarding your birthing experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS). I am pleased to hear that it was a positive experience and that the team were supportive and empowering throughout. WNHS strives to provide quality, patient-centred care.

I do apologise for any distress which may have been caused by the information regarding risks during pregnancy for women with a high BMI which was on display in the radiology waiting area. We will ensure that your feedback on this matter is passed on to the department.

I would also like to apologise for the occasions where handover was not conducted at your bedside as bedside clinical handover is something which WNHS does promote. This is a current area of focus for WNHS to ensure patient focus care.

Again, I would like to wish you and your family all of the best for the future and I thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our service with me.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
