"Handling mental health"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

As someone who struggles with mental health and has presented to Maroondah a few times recently due to related issues, I have witnessed the appalling treatment of mentally ill patients by the Emergency Department nurses.

I believe I have witnessed the nurses make jokes about and laugh at patients who, in my opinion, may be mentally ill, for things beyond their control, from the safety of the nurses' base, as though no one can hear them.

I have been afraid of communicating with the nurses, even when my safety is at risk, for fear of being mocked and humiliated. For this reason, I refuse to present at Maroondah Hospital, even in an ambulance in an emergency.

In my opinion, the nurses need extensive training on mental health, confidentiality and boundaries.

Dear slideyw38

Thank you so much for taking the time to share these comments regarding your experience when attending the Emergency Department at Maroondah Hospital.

You have raised a number of points that raise concern for me and as such I would like to invite you to make contact with one of our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au.

If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

Thank you again and I hope we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

David
