"My recent stay at your wonderful hospital"

About: Lyell McEwin Hospital

(as other),

After thinking my spouse had appendix issues we went for a CT Scan. This scan proved that my spouse didn't have an appendix issue but a perforated bowel problem caused by what they thought was a fishbone.

In conjunction with our own GP, the decision was made and our doctor rang through to your hospital that we were coming in. We arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) at around midday. This was the start of our run - within approx 1½hrs my spouse was in a bed, being assessed by different staff in many ways. They were classified as, I think, a Cat 4 admittance. I believe that meant they were to be operated on within 4 hours.

Come the evening, (well within that limit) my spouse was in surgery being operated on, and about 4 hours later, was in recovery and I was allowed to see them. The way the Emergency Department operated was, in our opinion, outstanding! My spouse was transferred to Ward 2B (I think its the Acute Surgery Unit) where the nursing staff continued to fuss about them.

We had a problem with another patient in the room, I believe being obnoxious with foul language and loud TV. This, my child, complained to the staff about. Their reaction was swift. The nursing staff acted promptly and moved my spouse to another room. We sincerely thank the staff for trying to care for all their patients.

I read in the paper one day about people complaining about the meals in hospitals. Why can't we respond to the other side of the story? We are of a middle income, aged people, and in my opinion what I tasted of my spouse's meals, no one can complain about. They were tasty. The chicken casserole, the beef schnitzel and especially the lamb/rosemary sausages were super tasty and I would like you to pass onto the cooks what our opinion is. I even ticked the vegan sandwich option by mistake and got an egg & lettuce mix, one of our favourites.

The Nursing Staff were outstanding, I'm going to name a couple and will probably leave someone out and I'm sorry about that. Simon was one, Debbie was truly another outstanding person, who you could be super proud of with her willing helpfulness, and another one was Kerry. There was, I know of another two. They will all know who they are and another, a lady with a headscarf.

Your nursing staff are truly caring and I believe are brilliant at carrying out their jobs. When we were about to leave, a person came in who couldn't speak English - what Debbie tried to do to communicate with them until their family arrived to help with communication, went far and beyond of what could be expected.

Sorry, I've prattled on but the "Consumer Feedback" form aims mainly at negative feedback so hence the long ramble.

I write this on behalf of my spouse.

Thank you.
