My adult sibling has suffered recurring and severe anxiety and depression for many years. They have been treated with little or no success by private psychiatrists and psychologists, including long stays in private clinics and hospitals. Care in these environments has been, in my opinion, fragmented, desultory, impersonal and frankly pathetic.
In the last year, all has changed soon after moving to Armadale south of Perth when they had another crisis. This time we took my sibling to Armadale Health Centre ED. They were assessed very thoroughly by a mental health nurse and admitted voluntarily to the Mental Health unit. We have nothing but praise for the systematic, inclusive and basically successful care my sibling has received since then. The continuity and teamwork between the various practitioners was fantastic. Best of all is the follow-up. As an outpatient, my sibling can call the Mead Centre at any time and speak to a case nurse who communicates with the same psychiatrist who treated my sibling in hospital. They have regular monthly meetings as an outpatient. Our sibling is not out of the woods yet, they are much better and we feel they are now well supported locally by a team that cares about my sibling. It is such a relief!
If this message of thanks can be passed on to the team at the Adult Mental Health Unit at Armadale Hospital in WA, we would be very grateful.
