Staff smoking

(as a service user),

Every time I have to visit or drive past the Community Health building at Geraldton Hospital, I see support staff in their maroon uniforms smoking at the bus stop.

I think this is a really poor message to be sending to patients and family. Very disappointing in my opinion!

Dear capellazw38,

Thank you for writing to us and letting us know about staff smoking at Geraldton Health Campus. Our campus is 100% smoke free and I am concerned that this has not been your experience when accessing our services.

The WA Country Health Service Midwest regularly communicates to all staff the requirement to not smoke whilst on campus and does provide support to staff who wish to quit smoking. Your story highlights that we need to remind everyone about this and I will ensure this occurs. I have also discussed your complaint with Derek Fraser, Operations Manager, Geraldton Hospital and he will raise the issue with his management team to ensure all staff know it is not acceptable to smoke whilst at work. We will also ensure that we review the area you have identified so as to discuss the issue with individual staff.
