"Patient room hygiene"

About: Albany Health Campus / Medical and Children's Ward

(as a service user),

My child was admitted to Albany Health Campus - Children's Ward via the Emergency Department (ED) recently.

Not long after we arrived into the room, my child went to wash their hands in the basin in the room (not bathroom) when I noticed droplets of blood, which were definitely not ours, on the basin.

Also, in the bathroom, there were what appeared to be, bloody stains on the shower chair. The toilet had disgusting, black, dirty build up just below the rim of the bowl, all the way around.

I felt very uncomfortable about all aspects of the hygiene in the room, and even more anxious given the current Covid-19 climate.

Dear Anonymous2303,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion. I’m very sorry to learn of your experience. There has been an appalling oversight in the cleaning of your child’s room, and I sincerely apologise that it was not up to our usual high cleaning standards.

We follow strict guidelines in the environmental cleaning policy with mandatory annual training. I would like to personally investigate and provide re-education for all staff providing discharge cleaning of rooms. It would be of great help to know more details, such as the time and date your child was admitted. I would be very grateful if you would please contact me directly on 9892 8239 or via email Mary.Lanagan@health.wa.gov.au.

We are currently trialing a new cleaning product on the toilet bowls which seems to be slowly removing the stains.

Thank you again for reaching out to us through Care Opinion. I really appreciate it, and I hope that your child is recovering well.

Kind regards,

Mary Lanagan
