"Security at Broome Hospital 👎🏽"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as a service user),

Today I went to pick up a mother who had just given birth and was being discharged. I went in and told the reception/greeter what I was doing. The security guard said gruffly to just stay there, please. I was actually talking to the person at reception so not sure why they felt the need to even say anything. The receptionist called through to maternity and sent me on my way.

It’s pretty stressful being in the hospital at the moment, it doesn’t feel safe or nice and I understand why it needs to be like that. I walked down to the general ward and the doors didn’t open. I stood and waited for a few minutes and no one came. I read the signs and couldn’t see the instructions. I walked back to the reception and from some distance, the security guard I believe called out, what? Or something equally as helpful. I told them the doors didn’t open and no one came. In my opinion, they rudely shouted to me that I had to wait until someone comes and gets me. I replied, maybe you could tell people that then, and they again shouted back they would have thought it would be obvious with the signs and I replied, thanks for being so charming and helpful.

The receptionist then said they would walk me down and open the door for me. I turned to them and said that the security guard didn’t have to talk to me like that, to which they smiled, nervously.

I understand it’s an anxiety-inducing time right now, but in light of all the changes taking place, maybe we could all be kind and the security could not speak rudely to people, especially those going to pick up a fresh mum and baby.

Dear Pinkpower,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us and share your story.

I am very sorry to hear about the way in which a member of the security staff at Broome Hospital spoke to you when you visited the hospital recently. You should feel safe and supported in our hospital and be treated with respect and courtesy and I sincerely apologise that this did not happen.

As you accurately point out, it is an anxiety-inducing time for many people at the moment and there are a lot of changes taking place across our health service. However, now is the time that we need to demonstrate kindness and compassion and help each other where and when we can.

I will discuss the situation with the security team and will share your story at our next staff meeting. This way, we can use your feedback to improve what we do.

If you have any questions or would like to talk to me about what happened, please do not hesitate to call or email me. My name is Sally Clark and I am acting in the role of Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery. My email address is sally.clark@health.wa.gov.au and my phone number is 9194 2852.

Again, thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Yours sincerely,

Sally Clark

A/Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery
