"Meals and bedding"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

The care was okay so far.

In my opinion, the food is really needing some work, the food is really bad. It seems they are not focussed on micro-nutrition at all. The vegetable servings are always frozen over-cooked slop. Is it too hard to have a piece of fresh broccoli, a few fresh whole string beans, fresh carrots and a slither of a corn cob? They need to learn how not to overlook vegetables. They are destroying all the nutrition.

I believe the meat is factory loaves which (despite what the manufacturer is saying) are made with offcuts and meat glue. I can tell they are not fresh, proper cuts of meat. They are drenched with high sodium sauces every time. I believe we need good quality beef and chicken. Is a freshly roasted drumstick too much to ask? Do we have to have processed roast or chopped up stew every time? What about a fresh cut of salmon or fish or a beef cutlet. Do we have to resort to tinned tuna for a fish supply? Even a fresh beetroot juice or spinach smoothie would help to improve blood quality to an unborn child; especially beetroot juice.

In my opinion, when a mother has issues with their unborn child they need a diet high in nitric oxide, no processed food, and good top quality fats and proteins. I believe there is a lot of research done into the value of blood flow and nutrition to an unborn child. Your food is just not cutting the mustard, in my opinion. I feel it is a real worry to a mother. A maternity hospital should exhibit good quality food. In my opinion, your nutritionist needs to be sacked or actually listened to.

The non-processed muesli was good, the freshly boiled eggs for breakfast was good. Other than that I don’t know what to say, sorry.

Look, the food is just not proper nutrition, in my opinion. We are trying to get as much oxidisation and nutrition into our blood as possible. We don’t need high salted, processed crud clogging up our children. We are trying to care for brand new bodies. I believe it doesn’t cost much to blanch a few fresh vegetables and buy some decent meat.

Also, the bed is appalling, in my opinion. I spoke to many women who said that the mattresses don’t cut it. When you lay on them you can feel the board underneath and it resulted in chronic hip pain for me and poor quality sleep. I ask that the manager come sleep on one for two nights and see how good they are.

I feel the staff were mostly lovely so far. I can’t stand dogmatic midwives and I have not encountered one yet. This is the place for struggling unborn children, as the doctors are quite good but in my opinion, I would not use my private health insurance here as the food and facilities are really bad.

I believe using it might help with your budget but are we actually going to see any benefit? What incentive will we actually see?

Dear decembergj38,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding the meals and bedding at the King Edward Memorial Hospital.

I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your food during your stay at KEMH. The Patient Support Services at KEMH adhere to the Australian Food Standards for the meals that we provide to our patients, which states guidelines for the maximum levels of salt and fat allowable. We also use these standards to ensure that we are providing wholesome and nutritious meals and snack to meet the dietetic requirements to all whilst in our care. I can assure you that the meat and poultry served from our kitchen is restaurant grade and are not off-cuts or glue meat.

We rely on feedback from our patients and their families so that we can continuously review and improve the service that we provide. The health of our patients is of the utmost importance. Your suggestions have been referred to the KEMH Catering Committee, which is inclusive of dietitians who guide us on the nutritional aspect of all foods. Your feedback will be reviewed and discussed at this committee to identify any areas where we may be able to make an improvement.

I am also disappointed to hear that you suffered from hip pain and poor quality sleep as a result of our hospital beds and I would like to apologise for any distress this has caused you. This issue has previously been identified and relevant planning is in place to replace the beds and improve the comfort of our patients. I understand that good-quality rest plays an important part in our ability to recover from illness or injury and your feedback regarding this issue is useful in expediting the solution that has been identified.

I would like to thank you again for providing me with your feedback, which will assist our service in making improvements for our patients.

I hope you are recovering well and wish you all the best for the future.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
