"My experience at the hospital"

About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Early last year, I went to emergency with terrible abdominal pain. I was kept in emergency for about 8-9 hours and then taken up to a ward. I was kept in overnight as they wanted to do more blood tests.

When I was finally discharged I was advised that I would be contacted for a follow-up appointment in 3-4 weeks. Well, I never got contacted for that follow-up appointment and was never advised about my blood test results.

I then sent an email a few weeks after with no reply (just the standard reply).  I then resent that same email, stating how disappointed I was that nobody bothered to get back to me nearly a year later. I received an email on recently asking for the details again, which I sent to them. I was then asked for some more information which I sent and then received a call a couple of weeks later.

During this call, the Nursing Manager just kept apologising saying that the doctors were no longer working at the hospital so couldn't discuss with them. They did tell me that in the notes it said a doctor came to see me on the day I was discharged and said I was free to go, that my tests were all good. This is not how I remember it as I have photo evidence that I was still at the hospital hours later. One of the nurses (who is a friend of mine) was the one that actually went and asked if I could be discharged and they told them yes. They then told me that when I come back for my follow up appointment they would let me know my results, well this never happened.  I just went to my own doctor and got more tests done.

I was just very disappointed that nothing was followed up after my first email over a year ago and it took them 14 months (and a few emails) to get back to me.

Dear alphans44,

Thank you so much for re-telling your story and what this meant for your experience at Eastern Health's Maroondah Hospital. I'm sorry it was not a pleasant one and that the was a lack of follow up over so many months.

I would be interested to better understand your experience so we can see what went wrong (sounds like you've told this to us on multiple occasions), but if you would like there to be a formal review, could I ask if you can make contact with the Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au.

If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

Thank you again and I hope your GP was able to provide you with the results of tests done (albeit again) and you're in the best of health.

Kind regards,

David
