"My parent's experience"

About: Uniting Bankstown

(as a carer),

My elderly parent was placed in Uniting Bankstown for Transitional Care after four weeks in Bankstown Hospital. I assumed it was a place of safety where they could learn to use a walking frame and be rehabilitated to eventually go home. In my opinion, how wrong could I be?

On the fifth day, I am told my parent was seated in the common room and tried to stand but must've tripped. Their fall ended with a very nasty spiral fracture of the right femur and they are now back in hospital. I believe my parent has endured a lot of pain and suffering, as well as an operation to try to repair the damage.

Apparently, there were a lot of residents around, but no-one actually saw what happened. One senior staff told me that it was quite normal for no staff to be present in the common room while residents were there. Another said they were actually there but only turned their back for a moment and heard a loud bang. The same person said that even if they did see my parent stand, they wouldn't have reached them in time to stop the fall. In my opinion, I would never recommend this facility.
