"Hospital stay"

About: Esperance Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

As a caregiver myself, being admitted as a patient can be fearful as we at times know too much.

I was admitted to Esperance hospital 2 weeks after arriving in town from working away from home. I presented the staff with a challenge of having a tropical disease down South.

I have found all the staff here, Doctors, Nurses, PCAs, kitchen, A&E, Radiology have all been so caring and welcoming. Knowing that I am a caregiver they don't assume I am knowing about my treatment and come and explain this to me.

The meals have all been fantastic, I am looking forward to a cooked breakfast when I go home. That is my only negative feedback about the meals. In my opinion, the breakfast choices after a week were getting mundane.

The one thing I don't like is that all doors are swipe or code access by staff outside of visiting hours. During reduced hours because of COVID, I feel this made it very difficult to go for walks outside without disturbing busy nurses to access you out. Also if there was an emergency even at night how do patients safely exit?

Dear Delphinuszp63

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience of your stay at the Esperance Health Campus with us. I really look forward to sharing this with all our wonderful caring staff, as how they interact with patients and family, is such an important part of our care. When we review our menu, I will take on board your comments about the breakfast and will discuss with the staff our options.

COVID-19 has made us think differently on how we best protect our patients and staff, one of the ways we do this is by ensuring we know who is visiting our hospital and have a record of this. The Esperance Health Campus is very lucky that we have had a beautiful outdoor courtyard, possible through the support of the Esperance Lions club, that patients can access too. However, I can assure that staff also don’t mind letting patients and encourage them when suitable to be up and about. Please be assured that in the event of an emergency the doors will open automatically if an evacuation is required.

I do hope you are now on the mend and enjoying being able to be out and about again.

Kind regards,

Margaret Smillie
