"Inpatient hospital stay"

About: Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

Hi there, my parent recently spent 3 days on Surgical ward and required 2 x blood transfusions for anaemia, they are quite elderly. Just want to feedback a couple of things regarding their stay and discharge.

Unfortunately, they were in a room that the blind was broken, so they were quite disoriented about day and night when they got home. Their dressing gown was left behind and family had to go back and get it (they have memory loss and was unaware it was left behind), and the last thing was that my parent's cannula was left in and was only discovered when their grandchild went to give them their night time medication.

Luckily a nurse in the family was able to remove it the night they got home. We don't want anyone to get into trouble but needed to let you know.

Dear chamaeleonqy49

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your parent’s recent stay at Albany Health Campus. Your parent should not have been sent home with a cannula. I am very sorry that this happened. As you will appreciate we take these type of incidents very seriously and I would like to undertake a clinical investigation to ensure this doesn’t happen again to do this I will need some further information, please contact me on 9892 2620.

I apologise for the broken blind in your parent’s hospital room. I know this is very inconvenient for our patients and visitors. There is currently a capital works process underway to replace the damaged hospital blinds. For health and safety reasons, the specially designed blinds are built into the window and are made to order. To replace the blinds, the window must also be removed and replaced. This costly and time consuming process will take time to be complete but please be assured that this is a priority at Albany Health Campus.

Kind regards

Trisha Power
