"COVID-19 clinic experience"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as a service user),

I was tested at the clinic recently and had two specific issues around the visit:

1. The staff member doing the assessment and testing, in my opinion, was not adequately trained. I wasn't asked a proper history, just asked what do I have? - nil specific questions around the length of time I was unwell, whether I was short of breath.

I believe the swab was also collected incorrectly - I was not instructed to tilt my head back and didn't until the second nasal swab (the nurse didn't forewarn me they were doing the swab or say to tilt my head back, I just offered).

The nurse used a rigid, non-flocked, dry PCR tube (orange top) when it seemed there were clearly available flexible swabs on the counter. The nurse swabbed my oropharynx for about 2 seconds and attempted nasopharyngeal with the rigid swab (when asked whether they were doing nasal vs nasopharyngeal they said nasopharyngeal). I believe this hardly touched mucus membranes and I feel it really wasn't a good mid-turbinate swab either. The nasal swab (or whatever it was) was less than 2 seconds. Now I don't trust the result in the slightest.

How many others, in my opinion, dodgy swabs, have gone through the Broome COVID clinic?

2. There was minimal to no privacy and confidentiality, in my opinion, was not prioritised in the slightest. I was initially asked the screening questions in the first room (okay, I get that you need to screen and triage initially: sure) however, once past the waiting room I was asked in the corridor minimal screening questions, my case was then discussed in a corridor with a doctor (and not in a private room) and then again with the doctor on the phone in the corridor. I was also swabbed with an open door. There were lots of private rooms with doors that shut. I could also clearly hear the assessments for the other patients and I believe I could also hear staff whinging.

I have previously attended the same clinic without the two aforementioned issues. In my opinion, not good enough in a pandemic.

Dear COIVD sore throat,

I was very sorry to read about your experience at our COVID Clinic in regards to staff training/swabbing techniques and privacy/confidentiality. The care you are describing does not reflect the standard we aim for and I want to reassure that we take feedback seriously and we are committed to delivering improving our consumer experiences.

I have discussed your experience with Wendy McKinley, Operations Manager Broome Hospital and we would like to investigate your concerns particularly in regards to staff training and maintaining patient confidentiality.

To facilitate this, could you please contact myself on 0408 913 638 or email Melissa.Stewart@health.wa.gov.au or Wendy on 0417 987 724 or email Wendy.McKinley@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us – we value all feedback. Wendy and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Millie Stewart
