About: Maroondah Hospital / Emergency Department Maroondah Hospital / Medical Imaging

(as a service user),

I was transported to Maroondah Hospital Emergency via highly supportive and professional Ambulance Paramedics.

The Ambulance Paramedics had been able to conduct ECG testing at my home in response to significant rib pain that I was experiencing. Ambulance staff advised that although the ECG did not present with immediate concerns, it would be beneficial to attend hospital to ascertain as to what was triggering rib pain.

I did have to wait a short time to be seen, however, was transferred into an emergency short-term cubicle. Medical staff automatically organised for a gamut of tests to be completed e.g. blood tests, ECG, Chest X-Ray, CT Abdominal Scan. Staff were readily available and attentive to my medical needs and comfort.

These tests were inconclusive and an onsite Surgeon advised that she would like for myself to be admitted into an overnight bed so I could have an abdominal ultrasound completed in the morning. Prior to being admitted to an upstairs ward and was given antibiotics and fluid intravenously, the nurse on staff in overnight ward provided me with a gown, non-slip socks and also toothbrush/toothpaste. Given that I came in with only my handbag I was extremely appreciative of this gesture.

I was very impressed by nurse handover discussions at the end of shifts. The discussions were comprehensive and were genuinely sensitive to individual patients needs.

On the following day, I was transported to and from my ultrasound downstairs in a wheelchair, the transporting staff were notably polite and pleasant in conversation. Whilst waiting for results of my ultrasound, the nurse on shift advocated for me to have a meal delivered at 3.00 pm as she was mindful that I hadn't eaten since 4.00 pm the previous day.

I was able to exit as my ultrasound did not present any issues. The scheduled doctor organised for my work medical certificate, more blood tests re abnormal liver blood test result and outgoing patient referral. The nurse went through the exit checklist and also requested if I needed any further information.

I want to thank all Maroondah Hospital staff who made my stay so comfortable. It was obvious that Maroondah Hospital has extremely well-developed processes in place as my experience from being admitted to exited was seamless. Staff were evidently supportive of each other which was transposed onto their patients. Keep up the great work!
