"Overall maternity care at KEMH"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Community Midwifery Program King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

The care and guidance I received after being taken under the care of the Midwifery Group at King Edward Memorial Hospital was supportive, encouraging and informative.

I came to them, a very nervous and anxious first-time mum to be and after being told by my obstetrician I would not be able to have the water birth I had always wanted I was very disappointed and then at around 30 weeks, my midwife, Sarah contacted me and said she saw no reason why I couldn't have the birth I wanted and we made an appointment to meet. From the outset, Sarah was a breath of air for me. She was kind, caring and supportive in every aspect. I felt she genuinely cared for me and wanted things to be in place.

There was always someone at the end of the phone for anything, whether a small question or a bigger worry to ask about.

When I was in labour, things didn't go according to 'the plan' and we had to make some changes to allow my baby to be born. The advice and support given to me during this time was invaluable. My midwife knew what she was doing and remained calm all along which helped to keep me calm as well.

After the birth, I was kept in for a few days to recoup and whilst there, the help and support I received from everyone was second to none.

I believe this is a service that should be open to all expecting mothers, low risk and high risk. The support needed when things go slightly off-plan is what I feel these midwives are made for.

I would not have felt so comfortable had I not had this help and the pregnancy and birth and aftermath would have been an entirely different story to what it has been and I have no reservations in saying that if I had not received this support throughout, I would not be in the stable mental frame of mind that I am today.

The midwife that came out to do the follow-up home visits saved me in so many ways and confirmed that I was doing things the right way and that I didn't need to worry so much.

I fully support the team and everything they do.

Dear Star23,

I would like to extend my congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your child. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS). I am pleased to hear that your experience was a positive one.

It is great to hear that you had such wonderful support from Sarah from our Midwifery Group Practice model. Our staff strive to provide our patients and their families with the support to achieve positive outcomes during their pregnancy journey, particularly when birthing plans are changed unexpectedly, such as your experience. I will ensure that your feedback is provided to Sarah.

It is also very pleasing to hear that this care and support continued during both your recovery on the ward as well as at home. WNHS is incredibly proud of the maternity care that is provided by our staff and the way they work with our patients to achieve positive outcomes during the pregnancy and birthing journey. WNHS would certainly like to expand the MGP service for our families in the future as our numbers grow so that more women in the community can access care from the same small group of midwives for the duration of their pregnancy, labour and birth and in the postnatal period.

Thank you once again for your feedback. Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind Regards,

Jodi Graham
