"Treatment needed"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Ear Nose & Throat

(as a relative),

My spouse has a large stone in a saliva gland which has been causing them excruciating pain for months. They have been to different GPs and to the Emergency Dept twice and we have been sent home both times without even being seen by an ENT.

My spouse has lost nearly 20kgs, they can't eat or go to work. They are already fragile, mental health is rapidly deteriorating which we have told to every doctor we've spoken to. The emergency room doctors were very sympathetic and said to us this is not good enough, they need surgery now. We were told if we went through the private system they would be seen by the same ENT as they would in the public system, which could be up to 2 years away. So, in my opinion, it's obvious it's about money and not the patient's needs.

I believe my spouse will not last 2 years and we do not have the money for the private system due to them not being able to go to work. I'm absolutely disgusted in this treatment. A friend of ours had the same thing in another state and was admitted to the hospital the first time, they went to the hospital and operated on the very next day! We are begging for someone to help us.

Dear hadarbh75,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with information about your spouse’s medical condition. It sounds like a horrible situation, and I agree with ED staff – this is not good enough.

In order for us to properly look into your spouse’s case, can I please ask that your spouse contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 or FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au? This will enable us to complete a full investigation.

Thank you, hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
