I was admitted to St John of God (SJOG) SRS Mount Lawley recently following major spinal surgery and I stayed for two weeks.
In general, the staff were considerate and supportive of my rehabilitation.
I was unfortunate enough to be placed into the care of one particular doctor. I was also unfortunate that at the same time as my surgery, I was subject to a severe attack of arthritis in both feet.
The combined pain from the surgery and arthritis was excruciating, particularly at night when, for long hours, my pain-scale was 10+ out of 10.
I repeatedly asked for stronger pain relief but on every occasion, this was refused. I was supplied with Targin 5mg/2.5mmg on a 12-hourly basis. I understand Targin is placarded for dosages of 5,10,20, and 40mg.
I was also (on demand), supplied with half of a tablet of Temgesic on a 4-hourly basis. I understand this medication is placarded for a dosage of one or two tablets
I also received 2 Panadol on a four-hourly basis.
When refusing to increase my dosage of painkillers, the doctor said they did not like to prescribe very large dosages of opioids! Large?
I do not know why, in my opinion, this doctor condemned me to two weeks of excruciating agony. I believe they obviously did not listen to anything I said and is totally unsuited to this position.
I have sent an official complaint to the hospital but have received no response.
