"Care (lack of)"

About: St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital

(as the patient),

I was admitted to St John of God (SJOG) SRS Mount Lawley recently following major spinal surgery and I stayed for two weeks.

In general, the staff were considerate and supportive of my rehabilitation.

I was unfortunate enough to be placed into the care of one particular doctor. I was also unfortunate that at the same time as my surgery, I was subject to a severe attack of arthritis in both feet.

The combined pain from the surgery and arthritis was excruciating, particularly at night when, for long hours, my pain-scale was 10+ out of 10.

I repeatedly asked for stronger pain relief but on every occasion, this was refused. I was supplied with Targin 5mg/2.5mmg on a 12-hourly basis.  I understand Targin is placarded for dosages of 5,10,20, and 40mg.

I was also (on demand), supplied with half of a tablet of Temgesic on a 4-hourly basis.  I understand this medication is placarded for a dosage of one or two tablets

I also received 2 Panadol on a four-hourly basis.

When refusing to increase my dosage of painkillers, the doctor said they did not like to prescribe very large dosages of opioids! Large?

I do not know why, in my opinion, this doctor condemned me to two weeks of excruciating agony.  I believe they obviously did not listen to anything I said and is totally unsuited to this position.

I have sent an official complaint to the hospital but have received no response.

Dear carinarb35,

Thank you for contacting us about your recent admission to St. John of God Mt. Lawley Hospital.

I would like to apologise that your experience was less than positive. At St. John of God Healthcare we place our values - Hospitality, Compassion, Respect, Justice & Excellence - first and foremost.

A key component of these is ensuring you are as comfortable as possible, and as far as possible, relieved from any pain.

I am sorry that we did not adequately control your pain during your stay. This must have been very distressing and falls short of the care we aim to provide.

I am going to investigate your complaint thoroughly and get to the bottom of why this occurred.

You have kindly forwarded me your details and I will respond to you by letter.

In the meantime, you also have my number and feel free to call me to discuss.

Kind Regards,

Andrew Yeates

Director Medical Services
St. John of God Mt. Lawley

Update posted by carinarb35 (the patient)

I was contacted by Andrew Yeates, via telephone. We had a civilised discussion. He asked me many questions and I believe he is genuinely going to investigate this matter properly.

If the doctor who is the subject of my complaint is not removed from their position, then I believe that, on a daily basis, all of their patients should be asked, by another doctor, whether they believe that their pain has been controlled adequately.

I look forward to Andrew Yeates' response to my official complaint. I believe I told him that I would not allow the doctor in question to oil my bike chain.
