This is a big thank you to all the wonderful staff involved with the care of my late father, in their 90s. My father was admitted to POW emergency in the early hours of the morning due to a fall injury to his head.
He has sustained quite a few bumps to his head, especially with frequent falls in the past few years, but has always been lucky to escape any serious consequences. Sadly, this was not so lucky.
I received a very clear, but sympathetic phone call from a Dr (David?) who’d been on the midnight shift, explaining that my dad had a scan that revealed he had quite a substantial brain bleed. Dr David kindly continued to gently break the news, that although my father was conscious and aware, his condition would deteriorate due to health and medication factors associated with his age. He recommended that I should come in to see him as soon as possible.
By the next morning, dad still in ER, he was propped in bed, unconscious but calm, and unbelievingly looking quite peaceful. The whole staff were so lovely to my sister and I. Everything was explained clearly, not rushed. We were given time to ask questions or ask for help. Offered cups of tea! We were told he’d be moved to Parkes ward(6?), and further explained about palliative care.
Everything they said they would do for dad, the staff did. We were never left out of communication, or help.
The staff were supportive, with family coming to say their last goodbyes were welcomed warmly.
The staff arranged a private room for dad and allowed us to play dad's music for him until he passed the next night.
I have told so many people how wonderful staff were and how perfectly they helped support our family during this difficult, especially, COVID times.
Being a healthcare worker myself, I understand the difference it makes bringing a personal touch to the professional care you provide. I am forever grateful for the high standard of care you have demonstrated.
My father has been coming to POW hospital all his life for all his medical needs and only ever had the highest regards for everyone there.
Please especially send this on to the beautiful caring staff at Parkes ward (my dad has been there a few times). They deserve to know they’re appreciated for doing outstanding work.
Congratulations to you all, keep up the great work! Keep supporting each other.
Thank you.
