"Workplace injury"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Late last year I was unfortunate and was injured at work. My department was quick to move and had me in the Emergency Department (ED) very quickly. On arrival to ED, I was triaged very professionally and very quickly.

I was seen by the registrar in ED and sadly, whilst our hospital doesn't deal with hand injuries, the registrar didn't contact the appropriate service, leaving me to make the calls on my own and arrange for myself to be seen by someone there.

Despite the bleeding coming from my injured hand and the adrenaline-induced shock of the incident, it seemed the ED nurse refused to give me a warm blanket after I'd asked for one stating that - whilst I was a trauma patient I wasn't a big enough trauma.

I was quite disappointed with the treatment from this nurse of whom also had a nursing student with them; as well as the Registrars lack of care in informing the appropriate services and completing the necessary paperwork and referrals to ensure I'd be seen by the necessary departments at the other hospital.

Dear araqy96,

Thank you for taking the time to write of your experience in our Emergency Department.

I would like to apologise that you encountered disappointing treatment in our Emergency Department. We strive to provide a high level of care and it was very disappointing to read that the care you received did not meet the standard we aim to provide.

I was also disappointed to read that you were left to arrange your own follow up with the appropriate service. This is not our usual process and I would appreciate you making contact with our Patient Experience Manager, on 9113 2687. I would like to investigate what went wrong in this instance so we can prevent this from happening again.

I do hope that you have recovered from your injury.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Darcy
